Wow, first posted in 2015 and now 2018 and the problem still isn't fixed.  I have an Acer as well (R7-371T) with realtek audio that is up-to-date per the built-in driver update facility.  I notice that Dolby Digital plus turns off automatically when the laptop is connected or disconnected from the power cord.  The only thing that has solved this for me is to turn off Hey Cortana as mentioned way back in one of the first posts.  Now Dolby Digital plus stays on no matter what audio source I am using and no matter if the laptop is plugged in or not.

I never used Hey Cortana much so not a big deal for me but it would seem if Microsoft wanted voice search to be their future they would put more of an effort into solving this problem.

Still ı have this problem. I'm wondering if Microsoft or Realtek is going to fix it. That must  be a simple problem for them. But none of them taking care of it.

This is the solution that worked for me. I've also posted this on the acer community forum where another user suggested installing equalizerAPO to fix dolby digital plus turning off by itself, i hope it will work for other people too.

Beware wall of text

So i've been looking for a fix for this F.... dolby digital plus turning off by itself for a very long time.
The only problem i was facing was infact dolby digital plus disappearing after installing equalizer APO on windows 10.
The solution i found to this was the following: I downloaded dolby digital plus home theater separately and installed it, however it was giving me an error that the driver and dolby versions were mismatching.
After some digging i found this post: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/dolby-digital-plus-audio-driver-is-7649-and/98a71242-2f0b-469c-8a80-0a09cd5c032c
Where basically this guy modded the dolby digital plus dll so it would work even if the driver and the program version mismatched.
So now i have windows 10 with latest drivers + equalizer APO + dolby digital plus home theater separated from the driver and working by itself and not turning off randomly. I also installed Peace (which is an equalizer APO extension to basically give it a nice GUI) and boosted my basses  =)

TL:DR : - Install latest realtek drivers,
            - install equalizer APO (dolby digital plus panel will be gone),
            - download realtek driver from this page (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Uninstalled-Dolby-digital-Plus-7-5-1-1-Lenovo-y50-70/td-p/2054523) and at the last installation step choose not to install so the program will only extract the files that contain dolby digital plus
            - Install dolby digital plus home theater
            - download and copy the dll the userWizouFRmodded from this link (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/dolby-digital-plus-audio-driver-is-7649-and/98a71242-2f0b-469c-8a80-0a09cd5c032c

            - start dolby digital plus
            - Dolby digital plus wont turn off by itself
            - ?????
            - Profit

PS: just reporting what worked for me, feel free to modify the post or remove the links if they're not allowed.

I had ANOTHER problem and found out that "Let apps use my mircophone" may be connected to the problem, because when turned off Dolby Audio can't turn itself off, however then microphone not working either.

alright i found the solution to this problem. i did some diagnosing by running a youtube music video and every time i went in to windows settings or start certain games or just go to different menus in general it was shutting off. well i looked in the microphone settings and the problem was in there. in the properties off the microphone make sure it IS set to allow apps to take control and check the exclusive thing as well. also make sure the listen to this device is checked. after doing this i was able to switch back and forth between any app or window without it shutting off the advanced enhancements or whatever it is. the thing that makes the laptop loud lol. and also if you are ok with it just completely disabling the microphone does the trick just as well. but i also noticed after disabling the mic and then re enabling it it turned off the enhancement again, but after turning the enhancement back on again it stays as well has having your mic on. i hope this helps someone because disabling the allow exclusive control on the speaker drivers did not do **** for me.

and of course the typical troubleshoot your devices bull crap in windows 10 did absolutely nothing and tbh i have never once in my entire life seen where that garbage response these so called Microsoft technicians give actually work. im a+ certified so im guessing that is far above then anything these so called techs are taught they probably have to read a script and that is all they are allowed to do. i bet there has been plenty of times where the microsoft technician knew what the problem was but had to respond with the troubleshot bullshiz.
